When I first moved to Singapore in 2007 it took me some time to adapt to and be inspired by my new surroundings. Initially I focused on a number of different themes, including landscapes, figure studies and pieces influenced by the clean, disciplined and artificial modern city.

However, I then gained a gradual understanding of the intricate relationship between the many different nationalities living harmoniously in one melting pot, which is fascinating from a social and visual perspective.  I love the contrasts that exist: the difference between the modern city with its high-rise structures and busy office workers, and the traditional – the bright, flowing saris, the hijabs and full-length tunics, the mosques and temples, the colonial architecture, and the local festivals.     I have also spent a significant amount  of time walking around the island, particularly on the East Coast.  I created a series of works, which evolved from my sketches of trees and weekend visitors along this stretch of coast.  I also found the horses, which gave me a new dimension to my scope of work.
