When I first moved to Singapore in 2007 It took me some time to adapt to my new surroundings. To start with I was not sure what to paint, I focused on a number of different themes, including landscapes, figure studies and pieces influenced by the clean disciplined and artificial modern city.

However, I then gained a gradual understanding of the intricate relationship between the many different nationalities living harmoniously in one melting pot, which is fascinating from a social and visual perspective. I love the contrasts that exist: the difference between the modern city with its high-rise structures and busy office workers, and the traditional – the bright, flowing saris, the hijabs and full-length tunics, the mosques and temples, the colonial architecture, and the local festivals. I have aso spent a lot of time walking around the island, particularly in the East Coast. I created a series of trees, which evolved from my sketches of trees and weekend visitors along this stretch of coast.  I also found the horses which gave me a new dimension to my scope of work.
