“Linda Ting Wareham is a figurative artist who takes her inspiration from the people and places she visits. This exhibition is comprised of new works of art that depict the colour and mystery of Burma, a place that she recently visited and fell in love with.
With each stroke of her paintbrush Ting Wareham elevates these depictions of the daily lives of the Burmese people into joyful celebrations of life. The rugged countryside, the pagada-strewn plains of Bagan, the market places and the dusty streets at Burma’s ancient towns, all serve to provide a rich and varied back drops to the figures that she portrays. One of the most notable aspects of Ting Wareham’s work is her ability to transform even the most commonplace incident into a work of art. Looking past the apparent mundaneness of daily activity, this is where the artist finds a deep sence of mystery whether concealed in the pails of water balanced on a young girl’s shoulders, or reflected in the gleaming piles of fruits and vegetables for sale in a market.
In contrast to these secular works are paintings of a more spiritual nature. Buddhism in all its manifestations, provides an endless source of inspiration for Ting Wareham. Novice monks appear on dusty roads, Buddha smiles serenely down from temple walls and then there are works that drift towards the abstract, increasing in allegorical and symbolic content. Works such as Bowl of Knowledge, The Cycle, Reflections and Journey, are loaded with references to Buddhist teachings and to the contemplation of religion in general, for example, the relationship between Buddhism and Christianity.
In a country increasingly at the forefront of the modern consciousness as a result of political and human rights issues, Linda Ting Wareham chooses to focus on the gracious nature and spirituaity of the Burmese people. In this exhibition, dedicated to the people of Burma, it is a sense of serenity and gentleness that shines out from each and every painted canvas.”
