This girl is from the Shan region where poppies are grown. Due to the enormous profit made from the manufacture of heroin and opium, the poppies are now mainly grown for this purpose and not for medication as was originally intended. The mass production of drugs in this area has earned Burma and its neighbours the title “the golden triangle”. I believe it is a dangerous area to visit. The Shan people usually come to Inle Lake market on Sundays to sell their farm produce and some then pray at the local temple. The Shan girl depicted, lost in thoughts, looking towards the candles and with her back to the poppies. She is contemplating the moral and religious issues raised by growing poppies in her home
